1929 Fleet Model 1 NC 607M: A Timeless Trainer with a Rich History

The 1929 Fleet Model 1 NC 607M is a beautifully restored piece of aviation history, originally designed by Reuben Fleet while at Consolidated Aircraft before he spun off his own company to produce this iconic biplane. Built as a trainer, the Fleet Model 1 was designed to be both durable and forgiving, making it a favorite among early aviators.

This particular aircraft holds a notable legacy—it's delivery was originally accepted by famed stunt pilot Paul Mantz, known for his record-setting 46 outside loops in a Fleet Model 1. For nearly a century, NC 607M has called Northern California home, with its last active flying period recorded in the 1960s before being grounded by a landing accident in 1966.

In 1992, Paul Siebert took on the monumental task of restoring NC 607M, devoting 31 years to meticulously bringing it back to life. His restoration was historically faithful, using original Consolidated Aircraft drawings and reference materials from museums and type clubs to ensure accuracy. Paul passed away in 2021, and the aircraft was completed by Scott Woods and Nando Mendoza of West Coast Air Creations, with its first flight in 56 years taking place on April 11, 2023.

Though originally equipped with a 110-horsepower Warner Scarab engine, NC 607M now features a 145-horsepower Warner, boosting its performance while retaining its classic charm. With authentic period-correct instruments, a carefully preserved livery, and an exquisite restoration, this Fleet Model 1 is truly a standout aircraft.

Purchased in 2024, NC 607M now resides at The Caldwell Collection at Mustang Field, where it will continue to fly and honor the golden era of aviation. Whether admired on the ground or seen in the sky, this Fleet embodies the craftsmanship, dedication, and spirit of those who built, flew, and restored it over the decades.
