THE CALDWELL COLLECTION AT MUSTANG FIELD
Training for Victory: The PT-19
The PT-19 played a crucial role in preparing WWII pilots for combat, and now it has found a home at The Caldwell Collection at Mustang Field. Known as the primary trainer for Mustang Field cadets, this open-cockpit monoplane was both simple to fly and rugged enough to withstand the demands of military training.
This particular PT-19B, originally built as a PT-23A with a Continental 670W engine, has been meticulously restored after spending decades grounded—at one point with a tree growing through the cockpit! The aircraft brought back to life by three dedicated aviation craftsmen and friends, logging over 16,000 hours of restoration. Their work earned it multiple awards at EAA AirVenture, cementing its status as one of the finest restorations of its kind.
Now part of the museum’s collection, this PT-19 will serve as a tangible link to Mustang Field’s wartime history, honoring both the student pilots who trained here and the skilled restorers who ensured this aircraft continues to tell its story. From its Ranger engine’s smooth hum to its no-nonsense military cockpit, this trainer represents both the past and the passion that keeps aviation history alive.
