THE CALDWELL COLLECTION AT MUSTANG FIELD
1929 Fleet Model 1 NC 607M: A Timeless Trainer with a Rich History
The Waco UMF-3 is a rare gem in aviation history—one of only two known UMF-3 models in existence, and the only one still flying today. This aircraft has a rich history spanning across Hollywood, World War II pilot training, and an extraordinary restoration.
Built in 1934, this Waco was originally owned by British actor Brian Aherne, who used it to travel between Los Angeles and New York during the height of his film and stage career. As war approached, the aircraft was enlisted in the Civilian Pilot Training Program (CPTP), the very program held at Mustang Field, helping prepare American pilots for military service. However, its flying days came to an abrupt halt when it was severely damaged in a grass fire, leaving it grounded for decades.
Aircraft enthusiast Barry Branin recognized its historical significance and acquired the remains, later passing them to master restorer Dave Allen, who spent an astounding 12,000 hours meticulously restoring the Waco to its original glory.
Key elements of the restoration included:
✔️ Handcrafted fuselage and sheet metal made from Waco’s original drawings
✔️ A custom-molded bump cowl created from a carbon fiber replica
✔️ Original throttle levers, period-correct map boxes, and vintage instrumentation
✔️ Authentic factory colors and checkerboard tail painstakingly hand-painted
✔️ 27 coats of hand-rubbed dope for a flawless finish
After its completion in 2011, the aircraft remained in pristine condition until it was acquired in 2018 and later underwent further rejuvenation under Rob Lock’s expert care. The final refinements ensured that every detail was period-accurate and polished to perfection.
With its Continental W670 engine and 96-inch Hamilton Standard Ground Adjustable propeller, this Waco is as thrilling to fly as it is to admire. Known for its smooth handling, cross-country comfort, and precision landings, it embodies Waco’s legendary slogan: “Ask Any Pilot.”
The aircraft’s exceptional craftsmanship has earned it prestigious awards, including:
🏆 Bronze Lindy – EAA AirVenture 2023
🏆 Silver Age Champion Antique – Sun 'n Fun 2024
🏆 Silver Age Outstanding Open Cockpit Biplane – Sun 'n Fun 2024
Beyond its beauty, history, and performance, this Waco UMF-3 is a survivor—a rare breed of aircraft that has lived multiple lives, from Hollywood glamour to wartime duty to a second chance in the skies. Now, as part of The Caldwell Collection at Mustang Field, it stands as a machine that continues to inspire pilots and enthusiasts alike.
