1946 Fairchild 24W:
A Comfortable Classic with Character
The 1946 Fairchild 24W is a unique blend of classic design, rugged reliability, and unexpected charm. Originally designed as a versatile, affordable aircraft to help Fairchild survive the Great Depression, the Fairchild 24 series quickly became a favorite among both civilian and military pilots.
Though considered an early 1930s design, Fairchild continued producing the aircraft well into the postwar years. This particular 24W model, originally equipped with a 165 hp Warner Super Scarab, has been upgraded with a Continental W670 engine—an engine originally designed to power Sherman tanks during World War II.
Though its modified nose profile gives it a slightly unconventional look, the aircraft retains all the charm, stability, and comfort that made the Fairchild 24 a favorite among early pilots.
The Fairchild 24W is known for its docile handling and smooth ride. Unlike lighter taildraggers, it absorbs turbulence effortlessly, offering one of the most comfortable flying experiences of its era.
✔️ Stable and forgiving, it doesn’t stall in the traditional sense—it simply starts to settle gently.
✔️ Its oversized landing gear ensures smooth touchdowns, even if the pilot isn’t perfect.
✔️ Trim-sensitive controls require fine adjustments via a ceiling-mounted crank, a throwback to vintage aircraft design.
This Fairchild 24W was restored by a meticulous owner who focused on quality and detail. The engine, airframe, and paintwork are all exceptionally well-done.
The Fairchild 24W may not be the flashiest aircraft, but it offers something just as valuable: effortless, enjoyable flying. While some aircraft require precision and constant control, the Fairchild is forgiving, strong, and designed to let pilots truly enjoy the experience of flight.
